Hillcrest Elementary Attendance Policy
Attendance and punctuality are critical components of student achievement in school. During the first few minutes of class, teachers orient the students to the work and quickly the boys and girls move into the regular routines of the classroom. Tardy students miss out on the orientation and part of the academic instruction for the day. They also interrupt the flow of the class by walking in late and needing personalized direction.
Thank you in advance for helping your child have a successful year.
TARDIES
School begins at 8:00 a.m. Students arriving after 8:00 are considered tardy.
Verbal excuses will be accepted for the following reasons only:
Medical appointments
Immediate family illness
*Only unexcused tardies are recorded.
If students arrive after 8:00, they will report to the office and receive a tardy slip. After accumulating five (5) tardies in a calendar month, the teacher will send the first letter to the parents requesting help in solving the issue. If a student accumulates ten (10) tardies within a 90 calendar day period, the teacher sends the second tardy letter to the parents, scheduling a Child Study Team meeting.
ABSENCES
Compulsory Attendance requires that all children who have attained the age of six years by February 1 of any school year, or who are older than six years of age, but have not attained the age of 18 years, shall be required to attend school regularly during the school term. Students may withdraw at the age of 16 by completing the Declaration of Intent to Terminate School Enrollment form.
EXCUSED ABSENCES
Illness, injury or other insurmountable condition.
Illness or death of a member of the student's immediate family.
Recognized (or established) religious holidays and/or religious instruction.
Medical appointments.
Participation in an approved activity or class of instruction held at another school site.
Up to 4 days during the school year due to head lice infestation.
ONLY WRITTEN excuses from parents/guardians will be accepted, and these notes must be given to the teacher.
Your child's teacher will contact you when your child is absent for 3 consecutive days.
When students accumulate 5 unexcused absences with a calendar month, the teacher sends the first unexcused absence letter to the parents. If the child accumulates 10 unexcused absences within a 90 calendar day period, the teacher shall notify the parents with a second letter, thereby referring the case to the Child Study Team.
