Students here's your chance to vote for the official state bird.

The Florida Department of Education in Collaboration with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission encourages Florida's public and private school students to participate in the process of selecting a new state bird.

This project affords students in grades 4-8 an opportunity to learn about participatory democracy as well as some new facts about Florida's bird life. Voting will occur on the same day as national election on November 4, 2008.

This is for students in grades 4-8. All voting must be done in the computer. Please be sure to work with 4/5 graders students.

The link that follows will take you to the electronic site that has the ballot, information on the birds, informational symbols of Florida and more. www.vote4bird.org

The students will be able to see the results of their votes the next day and know that in the future students will study a bird that they helped to select as the State Bird of Florida.

Come take part in Parent-Read-Along Days on the last Friday of every month.

Who? - Parents and teachers working collaboratively

What? - Reading out loud in your child's class a favorite or a focus-project book

When? - Taking place every last Friday of each month

Where? - Held in your student's classroom

How? - First, be sure that you are an approved "ADDitions" volunteer through the OCPS system. Then, contact your child's Language Arts teacher to schedule a time and collaborate on the focus element of the lesson

Why? - Children increase their enjoyment of reading by listening to a variety of voices and engaging in interactive learning. They are able to ask key critical thinking questions as you guide them along in the story. You, as an active extension of our school based community, are able to share of yourself and your talents with your child and his/her peers.

Fun & Healthy Food Facts for your children.

  • Drinking milk that is low fat or nonfat can help provide calcium to build strong bones.
  • Eating lean or low fat meats, fish or poultry is a great way to get protein. Ask for it baked, boiled or grilled—not fried.
  • Your body needs some oils. Try to get your 'oils' from foods like fish and nuts or from liquid oils like corn oil, canola oil, or soybean oil. Avoid solid fats like lard or butter.
  • Try a new fruit each week. See if you can focus on a fruit a week by naming them that start with each of the following letters: B, F, G, K, L, M, R, S, and W.
